MLB The Show 26 Strategy: How to Pick Cards | U4GM

When a new ratings update lands in MLB The Show 26, the first instinct is to chase every Diamond promotion and sell every card that drops. That reaction can waste resources, especially when the headline number says less than the individual attributes behind it. Before spending MLB 26 stubs, I compare contact splits, defensive range, pitch shapes, and how a card actually fits my lineup, because the best choice is often not the most expensive one.

Why the August 14 Ratings Update Matters

The August 14 release changed 751 Live Series players, with 518 rating movements, 120 tier changes, 15 additions, and 55 position adjustments. Six players reached Diamond status: Ceddanne Rafaela, Dillon Dingler, Drew Rasmussen, Bryce Miller, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Matt Olson. Five former Diamonds moved to Gold, including Corbin Carroll, Hunter Greene, Mookie Betts, Jacob Wilson, and Cal Raleigh.

Those changes are useful for tracking the season, but a tier shift does not automatically decide a card's value. Rafaela's rise from 84 to 87 reflects a broad profile built on defense, speed, contact, and clutch hitting. Miller's jump from 81 to 85 comes from a different route, with velocity, stamina, control, and pitch movement doing more of the work. They share a color tier, yet they serve entirely different roles.

Read the Attribute Spread Before the Card Color

A hitter's large rating can hide an awkward swing, weak defensive flexibility, or poor production against one side of the matchup. For lineup decisions, I first check contact and power against right-handed and left-handed pitching, then review vision, clutch, speed, fielding, reaction, and arm strength. A lower-rated bat with a comfortable swing and reliable splits may produce more consistent at-bats than a famous slugger who depends on perfect timing.

The same idea applies to pitchers. Velocity helps create quick decisions, but it is only one part of a usable loadout. Pitch separation, horizontal movement, vertical break, control, stamina, and release visibility often matter more during a close game. A pitcher with a modest headline number can feel excellent when the fastball and off-speed pitches share a convincing tunnel. Another with premium velocity may become predictable after several innings.

How Matchups Change the Value of Stars

Shohei Ohtani facing Paul Skenes shows why ratings cannot predict every result. Ohtani's offensive tools must deal with Skenes' velocity, pitch mix, and ability to alter eye level. The count, energy, confidence, pitch location, and user timing all shape the at-bat. A patient hitter can turn a difficult matchup by refusing to chase, while an aggressive approach may make an elite card feel strangely quiet.

A Practical Way to Spend and Build

Use high-tier cards when they fill a specific weakness rather than simply improving the collection screen.
Test a player for several games before judging the swing, delivery, or defensive reactions.
Keep versatile defenders and secondary-position options available for ranked play and Events.
Recheck cards after each update, since a small attribute change can improve a key split or push a player across a tier line.

That approach keeps roster building focused on fit, not hype. The August 14 changes show that MLB The Show 26 rewards players who study how a card is built and how it behaves in real matchups. Use MLB The Show 26 Stubs carefully, test the cards that suit your style, and let repeated gameplay decide which ratings deserve your trust.
