How to Write an Academic Dissertation Methodology Chapter

The methodology chapter is where you show your reader exactly how your dissertation research was carried out and, more importantly, why you made those particular choices.

I’ve found that students often make this chapter harder than it needs to be. They try to make it sound “academic” by filling it with complicated terminology, lengthy definitions, and descriptions of research philosophies that never connect to the actual study. A better approach is much more practical: explain your decisions clearly, support them with appropriate research-methods literature, and show how each decision helps answer your research questions.

That basic principle is also reflected in guidance from SAGE: a methodology chapter should connect the study’s purpose and research questions with its research approach, design, methods, analysis, ethics, and limitations.

What Is a Dissertation Methodology Chapter?

Your dissertation methodology chapter explains how you conducted your research.

Depending on your university and subject, it may be called “Methodology,” “Methods,” “Research Methodology,” or “Research Design and Methods.” It is often Chapter 3, although you should follow your department’s required structure rather than assuming every dissertation uses the same format.

A good methodology chapter answers several straightforward questions:

  • What approach did you take?
  • Why was that approach appropriate?
  • What research design did you use?
  • Who or what did you study?
  • How did you collect your data?
  • How did you analyse it?
  • What ethical issues did you consider?
  • How did you establish the quality or credibility of your findings?
  • What limitations affected the research?

One distinction is particularly important: methodology is not simply a list of methods.

Methods are the practical techniques you use for example, interviews, questionnaires, experiments, statistical tests, observations, document analysis, or computational modelling. Methodology is the broader reasoning that explains how those techniques fit your research problem and questions. SAGE’s dissertation guidance makes the same distinction, describing methodology as the thinking and decision-making surrounding a study, while methods refer to the specific procedures and tools used to generate or analyse data.

Start With Your Research Questions

Before drafting the chapter, I recommend going back to your research questions.

Put them somewhere you can see while you write.

Every major methodological decision should have a connection to at least one research question. If you cannot explain that connection, you may need to reconsider the decision or explain it more clearly.

Imagine your dissertation asks:

How do postgraduate students experience the transition to online learning?

You might choose semi-structured interviews because you want detailed accounts of students’ experiences and perceptions.

Now consider a different question:

Is there a relationship between the amount of time students spend learning online and their examination results?

That question points toward a quantitative design because you are interested in measurable variables and their relationship.

The important sequence is:

Research questions → research approach → research design → data collection → data analysis → conclusions

Your methodology should make that sequence easy for the reader to follow.

Choose the Right Research Approach

Once your research questions are clear, explain the overall approach you selected.

Qualitative research

Qualitative research is useful when you want to understand experiences, meanings, perceptions, behaviours, or processes in depth.

Common qualitative methods include:

  • Interviews
  • Focus groups
  • Observation
  • Case studies
  • Document analysis
  • Thematic analysis

If you are investigating how people understand a particular experience, qualitative research may allow you to explore issues that would be difficult to capture through predetermined survey responses.

Don't stop at saying, “A qualitative approach was selected.”

Explain why it suits your particular research problem.

Quantitative research

Quantitative research is generally concerned with measurable variables and numerical evidence.

You might use:

  • Surveys
  • Experiments
  • Tests
  • Existing datasets
  • Statistical modelling
  • Correlational analysis

Your chapter should explain what you measured, how you measured it, how participants or cases were selected, and which analytical techniques were applied.

For example, if you investigated whether study time predicts examination performance, you might collect data on weekly study hours and examination scores before using an appropriate statistical procedure to examine the relationship.

Mixed-methods research

Mixed-methods research combines quantitative and qualitative evidence within a single research project.

However, simply using a survey and interviews does not automatically make a study methodologically convincing.

You need to explain how the two forms of evidence relate to each other.

For instance, you might conduct interviews first to identify important themes and then use those themes to develop a questionnaire. Alternatively, you could begin with quantitative findings and conduct follow-up interviews to understand an unexpected result.

The central issue is methodological fit. Current research-methods guidance continues to emphasise choosing approaches according to the research problem rather than treating qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods designs as interchangeable templates.

Explain Your Research Philosophy Carefully

Some dissertations require a discussion of research philosophy or paradigm. Others require only a brief explanation.

Depending on your field, you may encounter concepts such as:

  • Positivism
  • Interpretivism
  • Constructivism
  • Pragmatism
  • Critical realism

If your programme expects this discussion, explain the philosophy and then connect it to your study.

For example:

This study adopts an interpretivist perspective because the research focuses on how participants understand and describe their experiences. A qualitative design was therefore selected to allow those experiences to be examined in depth.

That is much more useful than several pages defining interpretivism without explaining what it changes about your research.

SAGE's recent methodological guidance similarly emphasises the relationship between methodological foundations, research design, and the practical choices made during a study.

Describe and Justify Your Research Design

Your research design is the overall plan for answering your research questions.

Depending on your discipline, it could be:

  • Experimental
  • Survey-based
  • Cross-sectional
  • Longitudinal
  • Case study
  • Comparative
  • Correlational
  • Ethnographic
  • Action research
  • Systematic review
  • Secondary-data research

The key word here is justify.

Suppose your research examines how one company introduced a new information system. A case study may allow you to investigate that organisation in considerable depth.

If, instead, your goal is to estimate how widespread a particular attitude is among thousands of students, a survey may be more appropriate.

Don't choose a design because it sounds impressive. Choose it because it gives you a sensible way of answering the questions you have actually asked.

A well-constructed methodology makes this reasoning visible. Research-methods guidance from SAGE specifically recommends explaining methodological decisions and comparing them with plausible alternatives where that helps establish the rationale for the chosen design.

Explain Your Population and Sample

Your reader needs to understand where your evidence came from.

If you conducted research involving participants, explain:

  • The target population
  • The sample
  • Sample size
  • Inclusion criteria
  • Exclusion criteria
  • Recruitment process
  • Sampling technique
  • Relevant participant characteristics

Sampling methods might include random, stratified, convenience, purposive, or snowball sampling.

The choice should make sense in relation to your research.

For example, purposive sampling may be appropriate if you specifically need participants with experience of a particular phenomenon. Random sampling may be more appropriate when statistical representativeness is an important objective.

Don't claim that a small purposive sample is representative of an entire population if it isn't.

Instead, explain what the sampling strategy allows you to investigate and where its boundaries lie.

SAGE's dissertation guidance notes that the credibility of a study depends partly on the procedures used to select its research participants and distinguish the sample from the wider population.

Describe Your Data Collection Process

This section should tell the reader what actually happened.

Avoid vague sentences such as:

Data were collected from participants.

That leaves too many unanswered questions.

Instead, explain the process.

If you used interviews, you could describe:

  1. How participants were recruited.
  2. How the interview guide was developed.
  3. Whether interviews were structured or semi-structured.
  4. Where and when interviews took place.
  5. Whether they were recorded.
  6. How recordings were transcribed.
  7. How confidentiality was maintained.

For a questionnaire study, explain how the instrument was developed, whether established scales were used, whether a pilot was conducted, how the questionnaire was distributed, and how incomplete responses were handled.

For secondary research, identify the dataset or document collection, its source, relevant dates, selection criteria, and any restrictions affecting the analysis.

The reader should not have to guess what you did.

Explain How You Analysed the Data

This is one of the sections where vague academic writing can cause real problems.

Don't simply write:

The collected data were analysed using appropriate statistical methods.

Tell your reader what you actually did.

For quantitative research, specify the statistical procedures used and explain why they were suitable. Depending on the study, this might include descriptive statistics, correlation, regression, t-tests, ANOVA, chi-square tests, or other procedures.

For qualitative research, explain how you moved from raw material to findings. If you used thematic analysis, for example, describe how you became familiar with the data, generated codes, developed themes, reviewed those themes, and interpreted the final results.

Software can also be relevant.

If you used SPSS, R, Stata, NVivo, ATLAS.ti, Python, MATLAB, or another program, identify it when doing so helps someone understand or reproduce your analysis.

For computational research, I would go a step further. Record important software versions, model parameters, preprocessing steps, assumptions, algorithms, and relevant settings. A result is much easier to trust when another researcher can understand how you produced it.

Establish Validity, Reliability, or Trustworthiness

Your methodology should give the reader reasons to trust your research.

For qualitative research, different concepts may be more appropriate, including credibility, dependability, confirmability, and reflexivity.

Don't use terminology simply because it appears in a methodology template. The standards should fit the type of research you conducted.

Reporting guidance also differs between research traditions. For example, the APA provides separate reporting standards for quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research, reflecting differences in how methodological quality and transparency are demonstrated.

For qualitative interviews and focus groups, the COREQ checklist is another useful reference. It contains 32 reporting items covering areas such as the research team, study design, participant selection, data collection, and analysis.

Include Ethical Considerations

If people, personal information, sensitive data, or potentially harmful procedures are involved, ethics should be clearly addressed.

Depending on your project, discuss:

  • Ethical approval
  • Informed consent
  • Voluntary participation
  • Right to withdraw
  • Confidentiality
  • Anonymisation
  • Data storage
  • Data security
  • Potential risks
  • Protection of vulnerable participants

Most importantly, describe what you actually did.

For example, if your university required ethical approval before recruitment, state when approval was obtained and identify the relevant committee according to your institution's requirements.

Don't claim that you obtained ethical approval if you didn't.

Research-methods resources routinely treat ethical approval and informed consent as core elements of responsible research design rather than optional additions to the end of a dissertation. 

Be Honest About Methodological Limitations

A good methodology chapter does not pretend that your research was flawless.

Every research design has boundaries.

Perhaps your sample was smaller than originally planned. Maybe participants were recruited through convenience sampling. Perhaps your study relied on self-reported information or a dataset that did not contain every variable you wanted.

Explain the limitation and its likely effect.

For example:

Participants were recruited through convenience sampling, which limits the extent to which the findings can be generalised beyond the study population. To reduce this concern, recruitment was conducted across several academic programmes rather than through a single class.

That tells the reader something useful.

There is also an important distinction between a limitation and a delimitation. A limitation is a constraint that affects the study, whereas a delimitation is a boundary deliberately established by the researcher.

Acknowledging limitations does not automatically weaken your dissertation. In many cases, it demonstrates that you understand what your evidence can and cannot support.

A Practical Methodology Chapter Structure

Your university's requirements should always take priority, but the following structure works as a useful starting point:

3.1 Introduction

Briefly explain the purpose of the chapter and what it covers.

3.2 Research Philosophy or Paradigm

Introduce the philosophical position if your discipline requires one and connect it to the study.

3.3 Research Approach

Explain whether your research is qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, inductive, deductive, or another appropriate approach.

3.4 Research Design

Describe the overall design and explain why it fits your research questions.

3.5 Population and Sampling

Identify the population, sample, sampling strategy, and selection criteria.

3.6 Data Collection

Explain the instruments, procedures, recruitment, timing, and relevant practical details.

3.7 Data Analysis

Describe how the data were prepared, processed, analysed, and interpreted.

3.8 Quality and Rigour

Discuss validity, reliability, credibility, trustworthiness, or other appropriate quality criteria.

3.9 Ethical Considerations

Explain ethical approval, consent, confidentiality, data protection, and relevant safeguards.

3.10 Limitations

Discuss important methodological constraints and how you addressed them where possible.

3.11 Chapter Summary

Briefly summarise the methodological choices and lead into the findings or results chapter.

This isn't a universal template. Different universities and disciplines organise methodology chapters differently, so check your dissertation handbook and supervisor's instructions before finalising your headings. SAGE also explicitly notes that institutions can differ in their expectations for methodology chapter structure.

How to Make the Chapter Sound Natural

One of the easiest ways to make academic writing feel artificial is to concentrate too much on sounding academic.

You don't need sentences like:

“The aforementioned methodological paradigm was deemed to be efficacious in facilitating the attainment of the epistemological objectives underpinning the investigation.”

You can simply say:

“This approach was selected because it best suited the research questions.”

The second sentence is clearer, more confident, and easier to defend.

I also recommend varying sentence length naturally. Explain a complex decision in a longer sentence when necessary, then follow it with a short sentence that makes the point clear.

And be specific.

Instead of:

“A number of participants were selected.”

Write:

“Twenty-four postgraduate students participated in the study.”

Specific details make academic writing more credible because they give the reader something concrete to evaluate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Writing a second literature review

Your methodology needs methodological sources, but it shouldn't become another literature review. Cite research-methods literature when it supports a decision, then return to your own study.

Describing choices without explaining them

“I used semi-structured interviews” is incomplete.

Explain why interviews were appropriate and why the semi-structured format suited your research objectives.

Being vague about data analysis

“Statistical analysis was performed” doesn't tell your examiner enough.

Name the analysis and explain the reasoning behind it.

Pretending limitations don't exist

No research project is perfect. Acknowledging realistic limitations is generally more credible than making exaggerated claims about the strength of your findings.

Using methodology jargon unnecessarily

Your goal isn't to demonstrate how many research terms you know. Your goal is to demonstrate that you can make and defend appropriate research decisions.

Ignoring reporting guidelines

Different study types have different reporting expectations. The EQUATOR Network, for example, provides guidance across numerous research designs and includes resources such as CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA, and COREQ.

If a recognised guideline applies to your study, it can be a useful checklist when reviewing your methodology.

My Final Checklist Before Submission

Before submitting your methodology chapter, read it once specifically for methodological logic.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my research design clearly answer my research questions?
  • Have I explained why I selected this approach?
  • Is my sampling procedure clear?
  • Could someone understand exactly how I collected the data?
  • Have I explained the analysis rather than merely naming it?
  • Have I addressed validity, reliability, credibility, or trustworthiness appropriately?
  • Have I accurately described my ethical procedures?
  • Have I acknowledged meaningful limitations?
  • Are my methodological claims supported by credible sources?
  • Does the chapter follow my university's required structure?
  • Have I removed unnecessary jargon and repetition?

Finally, check the tense. In a completed dissertation, methodology chapters generally describe research that has already been conducted, so past tense is normally appropriate. A dissertation proposal, by contrast, describes planned research and therefore commonly uses future-oriented language.

Final Thoughts

The methodology chapter is ultimately a story about your research decisions.

You are telling the examiner: this was the question I needed to answer, this was the approach I selected, this was how I gathered and analysed the evidence, and these are the reasons I believe the process was appropriate.

That's why a strong methodology chapter doesn't need to sound complicated. It needs to be clear, specific, transparent, and defensible.
